In 2009, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Bloomingon started an official gardening progam at Camp Rock on Lake Lemon. Through this outdoor camp experience, children learn teamwork and group process, take social risks, learn about their environment, try new things and interact with consistent adult role models. The Camp Rock Garden is an annual program for campers.
Throughout the spring and summer, children ages 3-13 will prepare beds, plant seeds, cultivate and harvest flowers and vegetables. They learn various lessons from plant science to maintenance to selling their goods to benefit a charity/organization.
Campers in the Kid City-Hilltop program have an opportunity to plant, develop and grow their own gardens and learn about the natural environment, all in the setting of a Kid City camp. Enrollment is open to children in kindergarten through grade 4. Campers may enroll for one-week sessions, attending camp for mornings only or opting for a full-day schedule.
To build community awareness in 4-H members, to educate them on gardening skills and to teach team building. Through this garden plot, we hope to teach the members that there is a world beyond them. We can help others in that world by growing fresh food for the food shelters.
To create a Butterfly Garden that will provide opportunities for students to learn about the interdependence of plants and animals on Earth as well as learning basic gardening techniques, science concepts and habitat management
To maintain the current Pinnacle Prarie and to add a Garden program. Goals include: growing and maintaining native Indiana plants and habitat; growing, cultivating and harvesting the garden for school cooking classes and community events; learning about plants, produce, gardening and environmentally sound farming practices; demonstrating, to the community, the importance and benefits of growing food locally.
